Daniel Carey: Virginia Secretary of Health stops by HumanKind while in Lynchburg
It was an honor to have Virginia Secretary of Health & Human Services, Dan Carey on our historic campus in Lynchburg for a visit. We appreciate his work this year and most recently with Medicaid Expansion! Thank you for supporting the work we do across the Commonwealth.
When asked about his reaction and to the expansion and what it will mean for families across the Commonwealth, Dr. Carey responded, “Well my reaction was one of satisfaction and appreciation and it took a lot of people to come together, to make principle compromises and not everyone got what we want but I think what we got out of it was a broad coalition. Not everyone, but a coalition of both sides of the isle that are committed to providing coverage and the care that comes in the coverage to hard working, low-income Virginians. By the way, these are not new taxes, we are paying those taxes. The ACA was funded with new taxes that are still in place that Virginians are still paying. We’re just not drawing them down. I would say that the other thing is that I could just picture so many of the patients that I cared for that devastating effects like a heart attack or heart failure or a hospitalization for those things would’ve meant when they did not have coverage that now they will have coverage and the security that means to those future patients and families that have the security of knowing that they’re not one illness away from devastation and that they have the security that they need to seek help for chronic conditions for substance abuse, disorders, behavioral health.”
