At HumanKind, we recognize that structural barriers cause poverty, not individual choices.
Interrelated systems make it more difficult for some people to provide for their families. These structures drive disparities in access to transportation, education, childcare, health care, high-quality jobs, and affordable housing near work, as well as in interactions with the justice system and experiences with mass incarceration.
That’s why we center our work around creating a “No Judgment Zone”.
At HK, we focus on implementing strategies that enhance the economic mobility of families to help dismantle the barriers that perpetuate poverty. Operating across Virginia with six dedicated programs, (program offerings vary by location), we are committed to wrapping around families with the support they need to achieve stable home environments and alleviate obstacles related to poverty. Treatment Foster Care
“With the adversity some of these kids have gone through and to see them doing better, walking across the stage for graduation, those are the rewarding moments,” – Irving Ward.
With a rich history rooted in providing care for children, our Foster Care program is committed to quality support and permanency for children in need. Originally founded as an orphanage, HumanKind has evolved to meet the diverse needs of today’s families. We offer around-the-clock support and ongoing training for foster parents, equipping them with the necessary resources to create a safe and nurturing environment. Our experienced case managers work flexibly with families, guiding them through the foster care journey to promote healing and growth for children, with an emphasis on reunification with biological families or adoption.

Economic Resource Center
Our Economic Resource Center (ERC) is dedicated to helping individuals and families achieve financial success. Through educational workshops, financial coaching and loan vehicle assistance, we guide clients on their journey to financial stability.
ERC comprises our Ways to Work Program and our Financial Opportunity Center. Our Ways to Work (WTW) program specifically helps participants access reliable transportation while building credit through fair interest car loans. Our Financial Opportunity Center (FOC) empowers individuals with long-term employment coaching services, financial education workshops (where YOU are the hero of your story—the Goal-Setter—and WE are here to support YOU on your journey), and digital literacy programs to help them take actionable steps towards their personal and financial goals.

Parenting and Family Support Services
Our Parenting and Family Support Services program encompasses several initiatives designed to address family challenges. Family Partnership Meetings bring together all stakeholders to create actionable plans that support children and their caregivers. Additionally, our Life Skills for Incarcerated Women program offers life-skill classes to women currently incarcerated in our region and provides support for transitioning back into the community.

Healthy Families of Central Virginia
“Finally, I felt like I could take a deep breath. With Lindsey’s help I realized I could pay off my car with a tax return and officially become a vehicle owner for the first time in my life! When I got the title in the mail, I FaceTimed Lindsey right away — me and my kids had a dance party with her right there on the phone.”
Our Healthy Families of Central Virginia program features home visiting services aimed at strengthening families through personalized education and support. Each family receives one-on-one guidance from our compassionate Family Support Specialists, who equip parents with the tools needed to nurture healthy relationships with their children. We also offer various support groups for diverse needs, including breastfeeding moms, fathers, and mothers in recovery, ensuring that every parent has access to the resources they need.

Early Head Start
HumanKind’s Early Head Start is a free program that supports families and offers full-time childcare for infants and toddlers up to three years old in the Bedford and Lynchburg areas. This program promotes the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development of young children. Although we have an active waitlist and cannot guarantee placement for children over 30 months old, we prioritize those who meet specific eligibility criteria, such as being a foster child, experiencing homelessness, or having a family income at or below the poverty level.

Adult Services
Our Adult Services program offers a unique approach to care through sponsored homes. These homes provide around-the-clock support in a smaller, more intimate setting compared to traditional group homes. With a capacity for just two individuals, our sponsors receive extensive training to ensure they are equipped to meet the needs of those they care for.
Residents from Virginia, who open their hearts and homes, initiate the application process with our guidance. Under the guidelines of the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (VDBHDS), we help potential sponsors create a nurturing environment for individuals seeking our services.
