An Unbreakable Bond
Healthy Families
Kittie began working with Healthy Families in 2015. At the time, she was 6 months pregnant with her first baby. She had recently been through a family tragedy and was living with her parents. Some of the challenges necessitated counseling and therapy as Kittie learned how to cope with her concerns. When her baby was born 5 weeks early, Kittie was thrown into parenthood with an uncertainty about how to take care of her little one. She relied on her mother to perform much of the basic care.
With the support of Healthy Families staff, Kittie has since demonstrated increased independent living skills, a greater connection with her baby, and concrete knowledge about how to help her child succeed. Kittie successfully studied for and passed her driver’s permit test; she now has a part-time job and is working hard to get her driver’s license.
Her daughter is receiving speech therapy services and is preparing to enter part-day preschool in the fall. And Kittie’s relationship with her daughter has blossomed into a beautiful, reciprocal bond. They play together, take photos, go swimming, do art projects and spend time outside every day. Kittie’s demonstrates a deep love for her daughter and wants her to succeed. Kittie’s mother has been able to step back allowing Kittie to become a loving, hands-on, engaged parent. Healthy Families has been able to provide emotional support, developmental information, and coaching as Kittie has grown and changed over the past three years.
