HumanKind’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce that it has named Stan Southworth as its new President and CEO. Southworth, being an advocate for empowering people, brings a wealth of nonprofit leadership experience and a passion for positive change within local communities. He will assume full responsibilities in this role as of today after serving as the Interim CEO since January of this year.
“We are thrilled that someone with so much history with our organization, and such a depth of experience in the nonprofit sector, will lead HumanKind into the next chapter,” said Board Chair, Chal Nunn. “Stan is a strong, team-focused leader with a deep passion for empowering people to create change and enrich communities.”
Southworth has 18 years of nonprofit leadership experience in strategic planning and operations, resource development, empowerment services and education, early childhood and family development, and building effective systems of service. Specifically, Southworth brings a strong commitment to organizational culture, team development and empowerment services that facilitate systemic change.

This is not always easy work, but we believe strong individuals and families build strong communities. My goal in leading this organization is to build on the achievements of the past 119 years. HumanKind will not only maintain its high level of standards in service but will continue to expand upon our impact across the Commonwealth.”
Southworth comes to the position from his role as Vice-President and Chief Operations Officer of HumanKind. Prior to HumanKind, Southworth was the executive director of VirginiaFIRST/FIRST Chesapeake of Greater Richmond. During his time with the Robotics/STEM 501c3 organization, Southworth led the transition to a multi-state, multi-competition format to serve over 6,700 students and 57,000 event attendees annually. He also spent 5 years at Partnership for Families Northside, a nonprofit collaborative of public and private partner organizations dedicated to preparing North Richmond’s families and their children to enter kindergarten on-time and ready to learn. Southworth’s previous positions also include: Chief Operations Officer, Presbyterian Homes and Family Services (known today DBA HumanKind), 2004-09; Vice President, Bank of America, 1989-04. Stan holds a B.A. degree in Economics from Hampden-Sydney College.
In the past few years, HumanKind successfully secured a major grant and successful capital campaign to bring three locations for Early Heads Start to the greater Lynchburg region for the first time; offering year-round full day childcare and family support services to children aged 0-3 whose families live in poverty. Throughout the pandemic months have also worked with several partners to provide support services and employment navigation through CARES Act and Covid relief funds including the City of Richmond, City of Lynchburg, Counties of Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico, Community Foundation for a Greater Richmond, Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS), Jessie Ball duPont Fund, United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg, US Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Head Start, and VA Department of Medicaid Assistance.
The organization also provides programs and services in foster care, mental health counseling, financial education, fair interest vehicle loans, adults with developmental disabilities, maternal health support, workforce training, parent support and home visiting.
“HumanKind has accomplished a lot throughout its history, continuing to evolve and meet the needs of children and families,” said Nunn. “We are only able to do that – even coming out of a pandemic – thanks to our amazing staff and the exemplary direction of Stan Southworth. We are grateful for his ability to manage day-to-day operations and ensure we maintain a high level of service in our pursuit of excellence. Stan is a very caring individual whose heart reflects the values of the organization. Great things are on the horizon for the organization and we are thrilled for where Stan will take us.”
