Many low-income families in the Richmond Area are struggling to get to work, move up economically, and take care of their children’s needs because they do not own a vehicle, and do not have strong enough credit to access traditional vehicle lending.
We are hard at work improving lives in the Metro Richmond Region and the Greater Lynchburg area. HumanKind’s life-changing programs and services help individuals and families develop plans for achieving financial success through innovation and adaptability, resulting in a positive impact on the community.
We provide additional support to individuals and families in order to ensure they stay on track with their financial progress. This includes employment coaching when individuals lose their job or have their hours cut, help accessing additional supportive services, and direct assistance with bill payments, car repairs, groceries, and gas.
Please join us this year as we gather to continue building strong families for a stronger community. Your support is critical in meeting the needs of families in the greater Richmond and Lynchburg area.
The power to transform lives is in your hands. You can be a hero.

Meet Linda
Linda faced a devastating loss when her significant other passed away due to addiction. Determined to rebuild her life, she sought help by enrolling in an addiction recovery program partnered with HumanKind, a decision she calls the best she has ever made. While participating in the program, Linda learned about HumanKind’s Ways to Work car loan program through a referral from another support initiative she was involved in.
At the time, Linda was commuting from the south side of Richmond to her job in Henrico, a 30-minute drive that cost her $400 monthly in public transportation expenses. The unreliable commute caused ongoing challenges with her operation manager at work, making it clear that having her own vehicle was essential for stability and progress. Ready to take the next step, Linda turned to a trusted member of her support group for guidance. With their encouragement, she reached out to HumanKind, where her journey toward financing a vehicle and financial independence truly began.
On September 5, 2024, Linda enrolled in HumanKind’s Financial Opportunity Center (FOC). Through the program, she gained the tools and support needed to improve her financial wellness. She also participated in the SMART Saving 5 Series Cohort, which helped her understand budgeting and establish better financial habits. Today, Linda proudly shares that she has her own car, which has significantly improved her quality of life. She states:
“Having my own car has truly helped improve my life. I’m able to handle business in a timely fashion and don’t have to worry about being late. I am able to speak at different functions to help others. HumanKind FOC and Ways to Work have helped me in different areas of my life. Today I have started a 401(k) account to plan for my future. I have learned how to budget and build my credit, which has improved since I enrolled in the FOC. Today, I have goals that I want to accomplish.”
Linda’s progress doesn’t stop there. She is currently pursuing a degree in Culinary Arts to complete a dream she started years ago. Her long-term goal is to own a catering business, an aspiration she now sees as achievable thanks to the support and resources she has received.
“These are realistic goals, and today I can see them becoming a reality. Thanks HumanKind for being a part of my support team.”
Linda’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, community support, and financial empowerment. She has transformed challenges into opportunities and now inspires others to do the same.
