Volunteering isn’t just about giving your time—it’s about creating connections, finding purpose, and being part of something bigger than yourself. At HumanKind , we’ve seen how volunteering transforms lives in ways that go far beyond statistics. This is about the heart and soul of what it means to give back.
The Human Side of Volunteering
Think about the last time you helped someone. Maybe it was a small gesture, like holding a door open, or something more significant, like mentoring someone. That feeling—of knowing you made a difference—is at the core of volunteering. It’s not just about tasks; it’s about impact.
For many of our volunteers, it starts with a simple desire: to make their corner of the world a little brighter. Some join us because they’ve been touched by our mission, others to meet new people, and some just to do something fun with their friends, family, or co-workers. Whatever the reason, every volunteer story is unique.
How Volunteering Transforms
The magic of volunteering is that it’s never one-sided. It’s not just the community that benefits; it’s the volunteers themselves. Volunteering has a way of boosting confidence, reducing stress, and often becoming a lifeline for those who feel disconnected. In fact, studies have shown that 78% of volunteers experience reduced stress levels, and 77% report improved mental health (Gunn, 2023).
Volunteers also gain valuable skills that can enhance their careers. According to our recent survey, HumanKind volunteers reported learning skills such as communication, teamwork, adaptability, problem-solving, leadership, and time management. One volunteer shared, “When facing various problems during volunteering, I learned to think independently and find solutions, which can also be applied to handling work difficulties.” Another said, “I needed to balance volunteering tasks with my own schedule, which improved my ability to manage time effectively and complete tasks on time in my work.”
Nearly 19% of people volunteer specifically to learn new skills, and those who volunteer regularly have a 27% higher chance of gaining employment (Gunn, 2023). Whether it’s improving public speaking, networking, or customer service, volunteering offers tangible benefits that extend into professional and personal growth.
Why We Volunteer
At its heart, volunteering is about connection. It’s about showing up for others, but also for yourself. It’s about the moments that remind us we’re all in this together—the laugh shared over handing out race packets, the encouragement given during a challenging task, or the quiet satisfaction of knowing you’ve made someone’s day just a little easier.
The reasons people volunteer are as varied as the people themselves. Some do it to honor a loved one, others to support a cause they’re passionate about. Many of our volunteers talk about the friendships they’ve made—connections that extend beyond our walls and into their everyday lives. Research shows that 83% of volunteers consider “making a positive impact in the community” their top motivator, while others are driven by the opportunity to network or build skills (Gunn, 2023).
One of our volunteers shared, “While I do not work outside of the home, I found that volunteering with HumanKind was one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences I have ever had. Not only were all of the staff friendly, welcoming, and warm, this event showed me how amazing our community is. I was thanked numerous times for volunteering—what love was shown!”
Overcoming the Barriers
One thing we hear often is, “I’d love to help, but I’m not sure how.” Here’s the truth: the hardest part of volunteering is showing up the first time. Once you’re here, you’ll find that there’s a place for everyone. Whether you have an hour to spare or a day, whether you’re skilled in something specific, or just eager to lend a hand, your contribution matters.
It’s also important to recognize that the biggest reason people don’t volunteer is that they were never asked. If you’ve been waiting for a sign—THIS IS IT . Consider this your invitation to join our Kind Human Community of people who believe in making a difference. We promise, you’ll get as much as you give—and probably a whole lot more.
