The Power of Possibility: Ebony’s Journey Through the Financial Opportunity Center
When Ebony first stepped into the HumanKind Financial Opportunity Center (FOC), she didn’t arrive with a clear roadmap. However, she brought something just as powerful: determination. Like so many of us, she was searching for direction, opportunity, and the confidence to take her next step.
What she found at the FOC was more than guidance; it was a holistic system of support designed to help individuals build lasting change. Through a combination of employment coaching, financial coaching, and access to critical benefits, the FOC helps people set meaningful goals, create clear plans, and strengthen the resources they need to improve everyday life.
A Starting Point Becomes a Turning Point
Sitting across from her HumanKind career coach, Ebony began what seemed like a simple conversation about employment. But that moment marked the beginning of something greater: the rediscovery of her own potential.
Through the FOC’s employment coaching services, which include job readiness, occupational training, and education support, Ebony explored job leads, connected with the Virginia Workforce Development Agency and WIOA, and worked through a detailed resume revision.
Line by line, Ebony began to see her strengths more clearly.
Building Skills, Making Informed Choices
Accepted into the WIOA Accounting Specialist certification program, Ebony committed herself fully and completed it with pride. Soon after, she received an offer for an Administrative Assistant position.
But instead of jumping at the first opportunity, Ebony used the tools she had gained to evaluate whether it aligned with her long-term goals. She researched salary expectations, workplace culture, and employee reviews before making a thoughtful decision to remain in her current role — a decision that led to a $2.26 hourly raise.
This moment reflected the core purpose of the FOC: empowering participants not just to find jobs, but to make informed, sustainable career decisions.
Strengthening Financial Confidence
Ebony also embraced the FOC’s financial coaching services, which focus on building smart financial habits like budgeting, saving, and managing credit.
Through workshops and one-on-one support, she built skills that extended far beyond the workplace:
In SMART Savings, she saved over $500 and learned long-term financial strategies.
In The Beginner’s Guide to Using ChatGPT, she gained valuable digital literacy skills.
In Jingle in July, she planned ahead for holiday spending.
In Internet Basics, she strengthened her online knowledge and earned a certificate.
These weren’t just classes, they were stepping stones toward independence and confidence.
Facing Challenges with Support
In the summer of 2025, Ebony welcomed her second son, a joyful milestone that also brought financial strain. With reduced income during maternity leave, mounting bills, and an unexpected car breakdown, she faced a season of real hardship.
This is where the true strength of the FOC model came to life. Because the program integrates coaching with access to community resources and benefits support, Ebony was able to navigate these challenges with a team behind her.
Through Humankind’s Thriving Families program, she gained additional support for parenting and financial stability. Ebony explored strategies to increase her income, took on weekend catering shifts, and secured assistance through a partner organization, which allowed her to catch up on her bills.
Even small victories mattered. Ebony reduced her internet bill by $26 through the Xfinity Internet Essentials program, reinforcing that financial stability is often built one step at a time.
Creating Breathing Room for Financial Growth
When Ebony returned to work, she continued building momentum. With support from the FOC’s financial counseling services, she enrolled in a debt-reduction program and was approved for a $4,500 loan at 0% interest. She had been paying 26.90%.
This reduced her monthly payment by $87 and gave her something invaluable: breathing room. For the first time, paying down debt felt achievable.
Looking Ahead with Confidence
Today, Ebony continues to move forward with purpose. She recently interviewed for a Procurement Technician position with the Richmond City Police Department, preparing through mock interviews.
She is also purchasing a reliable vehicle through the Ways to Work Car Loan Program. After months of relying on public transportation, this step will restore not only mobility but independence and stability.
Ebony’s story is powerful because it reflects what the Financial Opportunity Center is designed to do:
Help individuals maintain and advance employment
Build strong financial habits and stability
Connect people to education, training, and critical resources
But more importantly, it shows what happens when those services come together around one person’s goals and determination.
Progress doesn’t always come easily. But with the right support system and a belief in what’s possible, it does come.
Ebony is living proof of the power of opportunity.
