Little Wings is the first preschool in the state of Virginia to be recognized as a HighScope Certified center. Awarded by the HighScope Educational Research Foundation based in Ypsilanti, Michigan, this certification demonstrates the commitment of Little Wings’ staff, the HumanKind Leadership and Board to offering the highest quality early childhood learning experience for students of all abilities and backgrounds.
HighScope is a research-based curriculum that focuses on active learning through an emphasis on adult-child interaction, carefully designed learning environments, and a plan-do-review process that strengthens initiative and self-reliance in children.
HighScope Program Certification means that the lead teachers and classrooms have received their individual certification. All staff attend extensive ongoing training in the curriculum and parental involvement is a key component with which families are engaged and encouraged to become active participants in the program and in their child’s development.
While emphasizing language and cognitive learning development, Little Wings simultaneously promotes independence, curiosity, decision-making, cooperation, persistence, creativity and problem-solving.
