Over the Edge for HumanKind FAQ's
Over the Edge is a signature fundraising event for HumanKind that sends people rappelling down one of the tallest buildings in Lynchburg, the Bank of the James. Not only is it a once in a lifetime experience, but it also raises money for a great cause – HumanKind.
Over the Edge will take place on Wednesday, September 9 and Thursday, September 10.
Kickoff will be media/VIP night where 10 Edgers will go over which will be held on Wednesday evening September 9. Most Edgers will rappel on Thursday, September 10 between 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
The event takes place at the Bank of the James building in downtown Lynchburg. Edgers will register on the 8th floor at Terrace by the James and get suited up. Edgers will then go to the roof of the building while their family and friends enjoy watching them rappel from the 20th floor down to the 8th floor where they land at Terrace by the James.
Just about anyone! Edgers must weigh between 100-300 pounds. Edgers under 18 years old must have a parental waiver and weigh at least 100 lbs.
Raising the money will be easy! We create a page that you can share with your family and friends via email and social media. They can make a donation on the web page that comes straight to us. You will be notified of the donation and we will send an acknowledgement letter to them that they can use for tax purposes as this is a tax deductible donation. You can also get creative! Host a HumanKind night at a local restaurant (Rivermont Pizza, Dish, TGIFridays, Texas Roadhouse have all done this before for people), organize a corn hole or trivia tournament; ask companies that you do business with for a donation.
Absolutely! We will do our very best to accommodate your schedule! We want you to participate and to be able to bring your family and friends to cheer you on as you rappel down the side of the Bank of the James building. Should someone have a specific time, this information needs to be shared with the event director, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
That’s totally fine! You can bring cash or checks by our office and we will update your fundraising page with your activity!
Make checks payable to HumanKind. Make sure your name is in the memo line so we credit it to your fundraising page.
If the minimum fundraising goal is not reached by the day of the event, you may provide a personal donation to cover the balance to secure your spot. All funds raised are tax deductible donations benefiting HumanKind. Last year, all of our Edgers made it to the $1,000 level by the day of the event.
Yes! Essentially, you are contributing $35 toward your own goal and asking friends and family to help with the remaining. When you register, the $35 fee will be added to your fundraising page.
You’re going to be walking down the side of the building so wear good shoes. No sandals, slip-on shoes, slippers, flip flops, high heels or steel toed boots are permitted. The harness goes around your legs, waist and shoulders, so it is best to avoid anything too bulky. Long hair must be tied back. You will be given a pair of gloves and a helmet to wear while you rappel.

YES! We have had South Paw, Elsie the Hornet, our very own Turkey Trot mascot, Wanda the Wildcat and Sparky all rappel before! Costumes are allowed but take more time to coordinate in the schedule. If someone wants to wear a costume, it is fine, just make sure that you notify the event coordinator with this information so we can add in some extra time to suited up and harnessed.
Of course! We host an all-day View Party with an emcee, food and drinks to entertain your guests as you are training and preparing the rappel. Our emcee will announce your name and why you are going Over The Edge so your family knows when to stop the socializing and cheer you on!
No experience required! When you arrive on site, you learn everything you need to.
Registering, training and rappelling will take between 1 hour and 1.5 hours MAX to complete. The actual rappel lasts 3-10 minutes depending upon the participant.
We should be able to continue the fun if it is just rain. We will only have a delay or reschedule if heavy rain causes people to lose their vision, lightening is observed nearby or heavy winds.
Yes, online contributions and checks are tax deductible. HumanKind will automatically issue your donors a receipt for their gifts. This receipt can be used as support for a tax deduction.
