As National Volunteer Month comes to a close, we
celebrate those who give their time and hearts to support others. At HumanKind, our volunteers do more than just lend a hand, they create lasting traditions, build meaningful connections, and become part of a greater family.
Creating Traditions Through Service
Many of our longtime volunteers return year after year to serve in the same programs or events, creating meaningful traditions that go far beyond the hours they give. Whether it’s helping at an annual holiday celebration, lending a hand to beautify our campus, or sharing moments with children—these experiences often become a cherished part of their lives. One volunteer recently shared a powerful reflection:
My daughter and I volunteered for the Turkey Trot in November 2023. It was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had as a volunteer. Having volunteered at various places and events over the years, this didn’t even feel like ‘volunteer’ work … Before we even left E.C. Glass, we made a pact to always volunteer for this event and make it our tradition.
The HumanKind staff were so organized and welcoming—we’re willing to help with anything that’s needed. This is an amazing group of dedicated, committed, hardworking (did I mention organized?) and unbelievably welcoming people.
One of our cherished longtime volunteers, Marilyn Overstreet, was recently praised by the Early Head Start Manager at our Bedford location. Marilyn, a devoted member of Bedford Christian Church visits the children at EHS-Bedford twice a month to read with them. Affectionately known as “Granny”, she has become a beloved presence in their lives. This beautiful bond between generations is truly special. Marilyn often shares how much joy it brings her to spend time with the children, even in a limited capacity. Our teachers speak highly of her gentle, kind spirit and the remarkable patience she shows—especially with little ones who have very short attention spans. Her presence is a gift to both the children and the team.
Finding Your Volunteer Family
Beyond the impact on the community, volunteering fosters deep connections among those who serve together. As one volunteer beautifully put it,
“I came to volunteer to help others, but I ended up gaining a whole new family in the process.”
How to Start Your Own Volunteer Tradition
If you’re looking for a way to create a tradition of giving, here are some ideas to get started:
• Make it a family affair – Invite your loved ones to join you in service.
• Volunteer with friends – Turn service into a shared experience that strengthens bonds.
• Become a Long-Term Volunteer– Choose an event or program you’
re passionate about and return to it each week, month or year.
• Set personal goals – Challenge yourself to complete a certain
number of volunteer hours or projects annually.
