Putting Kids First: Our Finest Opportunity to Transform Future Generations

Workshop Summary

Despite our nation’s amazing technological advancements, abundant material wealth, world-class education and research institutions, and unparalleled medical care, American children and youth continue to suffer stunning levels of physical, mental and emotional pain.

If the true measure of a society is in how its treats its children, we do not measure up well at all. While we often proclaim that children are our “most precious resource,” the facts paint a much different picture of childhood in America.

But there is hope. New insights from developmental neuroscience, pediatric psychiatry and educational psychology provide today’s adults with the opportunity to transform how America cares for and educates its children.

Part 1: It’s Worse Than You Think: The Plight of America’s Children in 2018

  • Identify the specific reasons American children and youth are suffering at unconscionable levels despite the technological advancement, material wealth and unprecedented knowledge of our society.
  • Learn the types and rates of adverse experiences American children experience in the modern age.

Part 3: Hope Abounds: Neurogenesis and Friends

  • Understand the process of neurogenesis–science of healing a brain damaged by adverse childhood experiences.
  • Identify the specific requirements of neurogenesis.

Part 2: It’s All About the Brain: Understand Distress and You Understand Everything

  • Understand how distressful adverse experiences change the structure and function of the developing brain.
  • Differentiate how young brains are impacted by distress from how adolescents are impacted by distress.
  • Learn why these brain changes last a lifetime if not identified, treated and healed.

Part 4: Building Great Brains: The Fundamentals of Nurturing Fine Minds

  • Learn practical, “use-it-tomorrow” skills for growing healthy, resilient and powerful brains.
