Since 1998, the Child Care Resource Center has been offering the Child Development Associate (or CDA) credentialing class and we continue to be the only provider of in-person classes in our region today. The CDA is an internationally recognized, entry-level credential sponsored by the Council for Professional Recognition (www.cdacouncil.org), and gives educators the qualifications they need to become directors and leaders in the Virginia child care community.

This year, in honor of the 20th anniversary of the Child Care Resource Center presenting the Child Development Associate class, we are introducing a new style of CDA class experience! We understand how busy you are. Rather than class meeting weekly, now you will attend class once per month for 2 hours, and complete assignments on your own.

For the 2018/19 course year, there are CDA class options offered at two different locations:
  • Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) – class will be held on the third Thursday of each month: 6:30 – 8:30 PM
    • 3506 Wards Rd, Lynchburg, VA 24502
  • Campbell County at the Timbrook Library – class will be held on the third Wednesday of each month: 6:30 – 8:30 PM
    • 18891 Leesville Rd, Lynchburg, VA 24501
Graduation for BOTH Class Locations will be July 20, 2019

Program Details & FAQs

Take the first step toward a career in child care with HumanKind’s Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential Preparation program. This affordable, hands-on program will help you prepare for the CDA Credential application — the most widely recognized credential in early childhood education.
Choose Your Age Group of Focus

Your program will focus on one of three settings aligned with the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential, which you will select when you enroll. Choose from:

  • Infant/Toddler Center-Based CDA
  • Preschool Center-Based CDA
  • Family Day Home CDA

Your books will be ordered according to the age group you choose.

Requirements to Enroll

The CDA class is open to anyone who demonstrates the ability to meet physical, social, emotional, self-help, and cognitive needs of children in their care, and can work effectively with family members and other adults to nurture children’s development. Participants must be over age 18, and must have completed high school or received a GED.

Participants in this class must already be working in an early childhood setting, or able to volunteer in an early childhood setting on a regular basis.

Classroom Observations

Two individual classroom observations will be provided to you:

  • The first visit occurs before class begins, so you and your instructor have a jumping-off point for your personalized learning experience.
  • Another assessment will be completed when you finish the course, so you and your instructor will see how far you have come in the development of your professional skills.
Knowledge Assessments & Assignments

Required knowledge assessments will be graded by the instructor, who will be accessible to you throughout each month for guidance and support, as you need it.

Assignments will be reviewed by the instructor, and must be completed before the instructor can sign off on them.

Required Hours of Learning

The HumanKind CCRC’s CDA class will give you the 120 hours of learning you are required to have to take your CDA exam, and along the way, will also give you education about brain development, different types of curricula, and ideas on how to support childrens’ learning in the most developmentally appropriate way.

Child Development Associate Exam

This class does not confer the CDA credential. Completion of the CDA exam, administered by the CDA Council is required.

Cost for Enrollment

The cost for this course is $515, which can be paid over the course of 4 or 9 months. $105 of the $515 is due at the time of registration, to cover the cost of two of the three required books ordered by the facilitator, and the cost of CEUs from CVCC. Students are responsible for purchasing the third book through the CDA Council by January 15, 2019, at a cost of $25 plus shipping.

Please see our payment plan for further information.

Class Size

Each class is limited to 30 students.
